Stargazing is the activity in which people gaze at the celestial objects comprising the Moon, stars, planets, meteors, comets, etc., with the unaided eye or via binoculars or telescopes.

As a kid, I used to do it a lot. The bright celestial bodies in the vast black background seemed magical to me. I tried to find the constellations named Ursa Major, Ursa Minor and the Pole star, as I studied about them only for the first time. Initially, I thought that only stars were visible to the naked eye, except the Moon, Venus and Mercury. Later, I found out that Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, some star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, etc., are also visible.

After knowing more about it, I tried to recognize the constellations named Orion, Cassiopeia, Andromeda galaxy, etc. Staring at them was awe-inspiring and, finding the farther ones felt ecstatic.

Studies show that people feel less stressed and thus more relaxed during stargazing. Research conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2014 suggests that those who stargaze feel more connected to nature. Also, according to a study published in the European Journal of Ecopsychology, stargazing makes us kinder. We feel diminished in front of the sky, which is larger and immensely powerful than us.

Source of epiphanies

I had many epiphanies during stargazing. Sometimes, it reminds the truths of life. I realize that most of our problems are limited to this blue planet only. And, they are not as sober as they seem, but we make them so either by doing them improperly or via our wrong mindset about them.

Many of you might know that whatever we see in the night sky is the ‘past’. Light emitted by most celestial bodies takes years to reach us. So, we perceive the time when they had illuminated that light. Consequently, at times we see a celestial body but, it doesn’t even exist then.

It also reminds us that humans and stars are nearly made up of the same elements, meaning the same origins. Staring them from a constantly moving planet reminds us that time is irreversible.

The night sky is an epiphany of beauty. It does nothing to show itself such majestic, unlike humans. I realize that we are lucky in our ability to appreciate such beauty.

I have a teacher who gives relatable analogies between studies and life. It is powerful. It can help you understand a topic if you know its relation in life and vice-versa. The example he gave was the importance of supports in beams, struts (including columns) and life.

In beams and struts, if the length of the body is the same, then the deflection depends on the type of support it has. Similarly, in life, our path depends on the support we have.

It’s a proven fact that analogies help us learn, and we should use them to our benefit.

Nowadays, studies, projects and fest work are making some of my days exhausting. I even burned out because I didn’t make limits between them. I am still struggling with it.

I observed a fact about my current semester that many topics and even subjects are not of much use. Thanks to our old syllabus.

I don’t know if it will resonate with you all or not, but I think that sometimes time-wasting occurs as a chain reaction. An incident triggers, then we waste some time, then another and congrats, you didn’t follow that day’s schedule.

I know these days are busy but satisfying. If I won’t do them, it meant I wouldn’t be doing my work well.

I
know that by seeing the word- compound, the first thing that strikes in your mind is Compound interest. However, this effect is analogous to it also.

According to this, the result of our work varies in the same way as compound interest does with time.

At first, there is no observable change. That’s why during the initial days of doing work, we feel that we are not getting the results of our hard work. These initial days might last for months and years, depending on many factors. These parameters include the effort we are putting in daily, which itself varies, type of work like studying, touch-typing, learning to play a musical instrument, etc. Also, the results you expect is a crucial parameter. It is because at many times, we have unrealistic expectations, and sometimes we underestimate the consequences. But, overestimation is more common relative to the reverse.

After this starting phase, we notice some improvement, and it increases over time, given that we are working consistently.

This concept solved many of my doubts. Earlier I thought that improvement varies linearly with work. Consequently, I got disappointed and stopped exerting that much effort and worked without jor with less motivation.

A related misunderstanding

It’s true that in the starting phase, we don’t see much improvement, but it’s also the same when we don’t work honestly, but think that we do. Therefore, judge yourself honestly. We all know
from the inside what we do. Fortunately, we can change our beliefs and deeds. So, do it accordingly.
Accept that this is the way through which we make improvements.

Meeting new people is crucial. When we restrict ourselves to a fixed number of people, we won’t know what qualities we lack. In this case, your judgement about your abilities becomes predictable after some time. It is because when you only see yourself working well (according to your set parameters), then there is a probability that you will have a feeling of superiority. But when you are in the company of many people and see some working well in a field. Then, your assumption is proved false. Then, you can learn from them and try to improve.

Also, we tend to miss and forget many things, but some people don’t. So, being in their company can remind you of those.

By meeting new people, I don’t mean prioritizing it over everything. I also don’t mean that we should keep more and more people in our lives, but those who possess valuable qualities. I know that very few people work seriously for their aims. It’s just that meeting more people increases our probability of meeting them.

If you are in college, then the best way to do this is to take part in a college fest. Another way is using social networking sites wisely to find them and learn more from their ideas.
